WILLANN STONE, PHD
Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Psychotherapy Services
I provide individual psychotherapy for adults seeking help with trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, chronic illness and pain, and major life transitions. Some people come to therapy because of a specific event or crisis; others are struggling with patterns or feelings that have developed over many years.
With more than 30 years of experience as a clinical psychologist, I offer therapy that is thoughtful, collaborative, and tailored to the individual. My approach is primarily psychodynamic and relational, with the goal of helping you better understand yourself, your relationships, and the experiences and patterns that continue to shape your life.
Areas I Work With:
Trauma & PTSD
I specialize in working with adults who have experienced trauma and PTSD, including complex, relational, and longstanding trauma.
Treatment may involve a broader psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, a focused evidence-based trauma treatment, or a combination of approaches.
I am certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and have specialized training in EMDR, which I incorporate when clinically appropriate.
Depression & Anxiety
Depression and anxiety can take many forms. You may feel persistently sad, worried, overwhelmed, irritable, or disconnected from yourself or others. Sometimes there is an identifiable reason; at other times, it can be difficult to understand why you feel the way you do.
Therapy can provide relief while also helping us understand what may be contributing to these feelings—the experiences, relationships, conflicts, losses, or patterns that lie beneath them.
Grief & Loss
Loss can alter the shape of a life. This may involve the death of someone important, but grief can also accompany the end of a relationship, changes in health or physical ability, retirement, children leaving home, or the loss of a future you expected to have.
Therapy offers a place to experience and understand grief without imposing a timetable on it, while gradually finding ways to live alongside what has changed.
Relationships
Relationship difficulties are often among the most painful reasons people seek therapy. You may find yourself repeating patterns you don't fully understand, struggling with intimacy or trust, feeling alone within a relationship, or having difficulty navigating conflict, separation, or changes in an important relationship.
Psychotherapy can help you understand both what is happening in your relationships now and how earlier experiences may influence what you expect, fear, need, or protect yourself against in relationships.
Chronic Illness, Pain & Medical Trauma
Serious illness, chronic pain, disability, injury, and changes in physical functioning can affect far more than the body. They can alter one's sense of identity, independence, relationships, and expectations for the future.
For 30 years, I served as Director of Psychological Services in Rehabilitation Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital. This work gave me extensive experience helping individuals and families navigate the psychological impact of illness, injury, pain, disability, and major changes in functioning.
Life Transitions
Even expected transitions can unsettle our sense of who we are. Changes in relationships, career, family roles, aging, retirement, caregiving, or other major shifts can bring feelings of uncertainty, grief, anxiety, or questions about meaning and identity.
Therapy can provide a place to understand what a transition represents emotionally and to consider how you want to move forward.
My Approach
My work is grounded in psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we pay attention to the experiences, relationships, emotions, and patterns that may be contributing to how you feel now.
At the same time, I believe therapy should be flexible. When a more focused approach would be helpful, particularly in the treatment of trauma and PTSD, I incorporate evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and EMDR.
The goal is not to fit you into a particular method of treatment, but to determine together what kind of therapy will be most useful to you.
In-Person & Virtual Therapy
I see patients in person at my offices on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in Westchester County.
I also offer secure virtual psychotherapy throughout New York State.
Sessions are typically 45 minutes.
Fees & Insurance
I am an out-of-network provider and do not participate directly with insurance plans. Many insurance plans, however, offer out-of-network mental health benefits that may reimburse you for a portion of the cost of therapy.
I will provide you with a detailed "superbill" containing the information your insurance company needs for you to submit a claim for out-of-network reimbursement. Because benefits vary from plan to plan, I also encourage you to contact your insurance company to find out what your particular coverage includes.
I'm happy to discuss fees and answer any questions about the process during our initial phone consultation.
Getting Started
Finding the right therapist matters. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so that we can talk briefly about what brings you to therapy, what you're looking for, and whether we might be a good fit.
If you would like to schedule a consultation, please contact me. I'd be glad to hear from you.
